SolarEdge vs. Microinverters

While traditional string inverters do operate like Christmas lights, where one panel can bring down the performance of the others, SolarEdge takes a hybrid approach. Each panel in our system is paired with a power optimizer, which allows panels to operate independently. This means shading or debris on one panel won’t affect the rest. You also get panel-level monitoring, giving you better visibility and control.

We’ve worked with microinverters in the past, but have chosen to stick with SolarEdge for a few key reasons:

  • Clipping Efficiency:
    • SolarEdge, our preferred single string inverter, allows for cost effective system sizing (~155% DC/AC), so you capture nearly all available energy.
    • Popular microinverters max out at 380W, so when paired with 460W panels, the excess energy (~80W/panel) is clipped and lost.
  • Serviceability & Reliability:
    • Optimizers are passive and stay cool under the panels; and the main inverter stays accessible on the ground.
    • If anything fails, you’re replacing one inverter, not potentially dozens of micros under panels.
    • This results in simpler, more cost-effective repairs over time.
  • Warranty Differences:
    • SolarEdge: 25-year warranty on both inverter and optimizers.
    • 25 years on micros, but the required gateway typically only carries a 5-year warranty, a critical component that, when it fails, is your cost to replace.
  • Design Flexibility:
    • Optimizers allow us to mix roof planes, tilts, and string lengths freely.
    • Microinverter systems require careful balancing of circuits and cable runs.
  • Cost Per Watt:
    • On average, SolarEdge systems cost 15–25¢/ per Watt less than microinverter setups, which can be re-invested in higher-quality panels. You’ll get nearly double the energy production at a significantly better cost-per-watt with this approach.

Smart Inverter Rebate Note

Ameren’s Smart Inverter Rebate – While we understand its appeal, participation requires allowing Ameren remote access to your inverter and the ability to modify its settings in real time, including adjustments to real and reactive power. It also limits you, and any future homeowner, from signing up for any third-party rate. Currently, none of our customers have opted in, so while we can’t speak from direct experience, we encourage reviewing the full program details here.
